The annual price curve of polyester staple fiber (PSF) sends a clear signal: the market center is moving downward. On August 4, 2026, the benchmark price stood at 7560.58 yuan/ton, down merely 0.06% from the start of the month. Yet, looking at the past year, the price ranged from a low of 6267 yuan/ton to a high of 8426 yuan/ton, with an annual average of 7037 yuan/ton. The current price sits near the midpoint, suggesting that after a year of volatility, the market has re-anchored at a lower platform.

Why the Price Center Is Falling

The pricing logic of PSF is driven upstream by PTA and MEG, and downstream by spinning mill operating rates. Between August 2025 and August 2026, the price spread exceeded 2100 yuan/ton, an amplitude of nearly 25%, yet the annual average was about 7% below the current price. This structure indicates that the market faced oversupply pressure for most of the period. Continuous capacity additions combined with slowing demand growth are the core factors suppressing prices.

Feedback from industrial clusters in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Fujian shows that operating rates at major PSF plants are around 70%, with inventory days typically at 15-20 days, higher than the same period last year. Upstream PTA prices have also weakened, further eroding cost support. For yarn mills, lower raw material costs should improve margins, but insufficient end-order volumes have caused product prices to follow the decline, leaving actual profitability largely unchanged.

Transmission Effects Along the Chain

With the current price at the midpoint, neither upstream nor downstream has strong incentives for one-sided positioning. For buyers, 7560 yuan/ton is neither a bargain nor a panic-buying level. More telling are the gaps: 865 yuan/ton below the annual high and 1293 yuan/ton above the low. This suggests solid support beneath, but obvious resistance above.

For weaving and apparel companies, stable raw material prices help with cost budgeting, but caution is warranted: if crude oil rebounds or PTA units undergo concentrated maintenance, PSF prices could rise quickly. Conversely, weak demand may push prices down to test the 7000 yuan/ton psychological level. Therefore, the current phase calls for purchasing on demand rather than stockpiling.

Strategies for Trade and Procurement

In foreign trade, PSF price fluctuations directly affect the competitiveness of exported yarn and fabric quotations. The gap between the annual average of 7037 yuan/ton and the current price implies that if long-term contracts are signed at today's prices, companies risk cost disadvantages if prices fall. It is advisable to include raw-material price adjustment clauses in quotations or use futures tools to lock in costs.

For Procurement Teams - Maintain a lean inventory strategy, replenishing on a 15-20 day rolling basis, and avoid heavy stockpiling at the midpoint price - Monitor PTA and MEG trends; if upstream prices rise consecutively, consider locking in PSF orders ahead of time - Negotiate short-term floating-price contracts with suppliers to keep price volatility within acceptable bounds

For Foreign Trade Companies - Adopt quarterly price adjustment mechanisms in export quotations, using the average PSF price of the trailing three months as the benchmark - Utilize forward currency hedging and raw-material hedging tools to mitigate dual risks from exchange rates and material costs - Pay attention to demand changes in Southeast Asia and South Asia, regions with high import dependence on PSF and strong price sensitivity
