On August 7, three textile mills in Shandong published quotes for 32S ring-spun polyester yarn with a spread of 600 CNY per ton: Weifang Runfengda at 11,550 CNY/T, Honghua Textile at 12,050 CNY/T, and Guanjie Textile at 12,150 CNY/T. The same specification, same grade, and same ring-spun large-chemical fiber, yet the price gap is enough to cover a week's electricity for a small weaving factory. This is not random market noise but a genuine reflection of supply-demand dynamics at the regional level.

Three Logics Behind the Price Divergence

On the surface, the quote differences stem from each mill's production costs and inventory strategies. Runfengda's low price of 11,550 CNY/T clearly aims to destock quickly and free up cash, while Guanjie's insistence on 12,150 CNY/T leans toward maintaining brand premium and profit margins. But the deeper reason is that raw material prices for PTA and MEG have been fluctuating in a narrow range, offering no clear direction for yarn mills, leading each to price based on its own order book.

From an industrial cluster perspective, Weifang, a key cotton and chemical fiber hub in Shandong, has short logistics distances and high information transparency among enterprises, which should normally lead to converging quotes. However, the spread indicates a tug-of-war between overcapacity and weak demand: low-price mills try to trade volume for price, while high-price mills bet on quality and service. For buyers, this opens negotiation room but also warns of quality risks behind low prices.

Notably, all three mills quote "large-chemical" yarn, meaning high-quality chip-spun fiber from large polyester plants, with better stability than small-chemical alternatives. Given equal quality, the 600 CNY/T spread highlights irrationality in pricing mechanisms. For a mid-sized weaving mill purchasing hundreds of tons monthly, this spread translates into a monthly cost difference of 60,000 CNY, enough to affect order competitiveness.

Transmission Effects to Downstream and Foreign Trade

The loosening of polyester yarn quotes will directly transmit to grey fabric and apparel fabric sectors. 32S ring-spun yarn is a main raw material for woven fabrics, widely used in garment linings, home textiles, and industrial textiles. Currently in the autumn/winter fabric stocking season, downstream weavers have replenishment needs, and low quotes may spur early lock-in orders, temporarily boosting transaction volumes. However, if raw material prices lack support, this price trough may not last until September.

For foreign trade companies, exchange rate fluctuations and high freight costs have already squeezed margins; lower yarn prices are a welcome relief. But caution is needed: low prices often come with stricter payment terms or longer lead times. Guanjie's quote 600 CNY higher may include faster delivery commitments or more flexible payment terms, which are crucial for export orders. Therefore, traders should not compare unit prices alone but evaluate suppliers' delivery capability and quality consistency.

From an industry cycle perspective, current polyester yarn prices are in the mid-to-low range of the past two years but have not yet hit historical lows. If crude oil continues to weaken, PTA cost support will further loosen, and yarn prices may have more room to fall. Conversely, if the traditional golden September and silver October demand materializes, the current spread may quickly narrow. This requires buyers to weigh "chasing low" against "waiting for lower."

Practical Suggestions

For Buyers - Use the current spread for multi-source inquiries, but request recent batch quality inspection reports to confirm "large-chemical" indicators. - If monthly usage is stable, consider short-term floating-price contracts with low-price suppliers to lock in current lows, with quality breach clauses. - Monitor PTA futures trends: if crude rebounds, stock up in advance; if it continues to fall, maintain low inventory.

For Foreign Trade Companies - Pass on the benefit of lower yarn prices to fabric quotes to enhance order competitiveness, while reserving buffers for exchange rate fluctuations. - For time-sensitive orders, prioritize suppliers with slightly higher quotes but clear delivery schedules to avoid delay penalties. - Track operating rates and inventory data in Weifang and other producing areas; if the spread widens beyond 800 CNY/T, treat it as an oversold signal and consider strategic stockpiling.
