While the industry still frets over chip price fluctuations, a leading player has answered with a 4.87 billion yuan investment. Hengyi Petrochemical announced it will build a 400,000-tonne annual PA6 direct-spin project through its subsidiaries Guangxi Hengyi New Materials and Hangzhou Yizhijin New Materials, with a planned 18-month construction period. This is not just capacity expansion but a redefinition of the nylon chain's cost structure.
Background
The project will be located in the Guangxi New Materials Industrial Park and the Yizhijin New Materials Industrial Park, funded by internal and external financing. Notably, production will fully adopt Hengyi's proprietary PA6 direct-spin technology, which contrasts sharply with the traditional batch chip-spinning route. Public data shows the process cuts water consumption by about 80% and electricity by 30%, while eliminating intermediate steps like chip packaging, warehousing, and transport, and reducing pollutant and waste emissions.
In terms of capacity base, Guangxi Hengyi New Materials currently operates a 600,000-tonne annual PA6 chip unit, running at full capacity through 2026. Once the new project is online, the company will extend from chip feedstock to downstream spinning, filling a key gap in the nylon chain. For the industry, this signals that the traditional boundary between chip suppliers and spinning mills is blurring, and integrated layouts are becoming the norm for leaders.
Industry Impact
The underlying logic is a dual play on cost and market. Direct-spin technology eliminates intermediate links, directly compressing full-process costs, giving integrated players greater resilience against chip price volatility. For buyers, this means the pricing mechanism for PA6 spun products may shift—when feedstock and spinning belong to the same firm, cost pass-through becomes more transparent, but it may also squeeze independent spinners' margins.
Currently, the chemical fiber industry is accelerating toward high-end, green, and low-carbon upgrades. PA6, as a high-performance fiber material, has become a core track for leaders to build new growth curves. As a dual-track leader in polyester and nylon, Hengyi clearly aims to consolidate its competitive edge. But the deeper impact is that as direct-spin technology spreads, industry energy and emission standards may be reset, forcing smaller players relying on traditional chip-spinning to face greater technical upgrade pressure.
For traders, the 18-month construction period aligns with a possible capacity release cycle. Exporters should note that new supply may pressure PA6 chip and spun product prices, but high-quality, low-carbon-footprint products could command a premium. Additionally, the Guangxi base's location offers logistical advantages for reaching Southeast Asian markets.
