A cotton T-shirt that is both soft as a cloud and crisp in shape, surviving repeated washes without losing form—this seemingly ordinary consumer demand is a recognized common technical challenge in the cotton textile industry. In the past, manufacturers relied heavily on chemical additives to balance these two properties, but the environmental risks and quality losses have been persistent pain points. In 2026, Shandong Province's key R&D program (Major Science and Technology Innovation Project) has listed "Key Technology Development and Industrialization of Ultra-Soft and Shape-Retaining Cotton Fabrics" as a key project, led by Shandong Weiqiao Textile Technology Co., Ltd., and jointly undertaken by Tianjin Polytechnic University, Donghua University, Binzhou Weiqiao CAS Institute, and Jingwei Intelligent Textile Machinery Company, marking a systematic push to solve this problem.
Background
The project was launched in August 2026, at a critical time when the national strategy for light industry and textile technology innovation and green low-carbon development is accelerating. The core idea is to abandon reliance on chemical additives and start from the intrinsic structure of yarn, carrying out physical modification technology innovation. This means that in the future, all-cotton fabrics may achieve the unity of "ultra-soft" and "shape retention" at the fiber and yarn level, rather than relying on chemical treatment in the finishing process. This source-level innovation path will bring profound changes to every link of the cotton textile industry chain—from raw material selection, spinning processes, to weaving and dyeing.
For buyers, this technical direction means the "ceiling" of fabric performance may be broken. Traditionally, buyers could only choose between "soft" and "crisp," or compensate by increasing fabric weight or blending with synthetic fibers, but this sacrifices the natural properties of pure cotton. Once physical modification technology is industrialized, pure cotton fabrics will be able to meet the strict requirements of different categories such as high-end underwear, outerwear T-shirts, and shirts, thereby broadening the application scenarios of cotton products and increasing product added value.
Industrial Impact
From an industrial belt perspective, Shandong is a major cotton textile province. Weiqiao Textile, as an important cotton textile enterprise globally, its technological breakthrough will directly radiate to Binzhou, Zouping, and surrounding industrial clusters. The project brings together the research strengths of Tianjin Polytechnic University and Donghua University, two leading textile universities, and Jingwei Intelligent's experience in textile machinery equipment, forming a closed loop of "industry-academia-research-application," which helps accelerate the transformation from laboratory to production line. This collaborative model also provides a template for technology upgrading for other textile industrial clusters.
For factories, if physical modification technology can replace chemical additives, it will significantly reduce wastewater treatment costs and chemical management risks, aligning with green manufacturing trends. At the same time, since the problem is solved at the yarn source, process parameters in spinning and weaving need to be readjusted, which may give rise to a batch of new yarn types and specialized spinning equipment, bringing new markets for upstream equipment companies. However, it must be noted that technical breakthroughs carry uncertainty, and there is still a distance from laboratory to mass production; enterprises need to rationally assess input-output.
