In August, domestic PTA spot prices experienced a volatile first-then-rise pattern, climbing from 5,945 yuan per ton at the beginning of the month to 6,453 yuan per ton by month-end, a cumulative increase of 8.53%. This rally was not demand-driven but resulted from supply contraction and higher feedstock costs. For downstream polyester and textile enterprises, rapidly rising raw material costs mean squeezed profit margins, making procurement timing and inventory management the most pressing practical concerns.

Background

The core driver of this round of price increase was the supply side. From mid-August, multiple major PTA units entered concentrated maintenance, pushing the industry operating rate down to a yearly low. Social inventory continued to decline, and spot supply tightened noticeably. Meanwhile, international crude oil remained elevated amid geopolitical disturbances, and PX prices moved higher, providing strong cost support. The combination of these factors drove PTA spot prices into a one-sided rally in mid-August.

However, upward momentum has clearly weakened by month-end. From late August to early September, maintenance units are set to restart, and the industry operating rate is expected to rebound quickly, gradually easing the nearly month-long tight spot supply. Supply recovery has become the core bearish factor capping further price gains, and the market is entering a supply-demand rebalancing phase.

Cost-side support is also weakening. As of August 24, WTI crude for October settled at $85.01 per barrel, and Brent for November at $90.54 per barrel. Oil price volatility is rising, but multiple Asian PX units are resuming production, raising expectations of ample feedstock supply. PX price increases are slowing, reducing its cost support to PTA.

Industry Impact

Demand is the key variable determining future direction. Polyester operating rates remain at mid-level, and finished product inventories are within a reasonable range. The industry holds strong expectations for the traditional peak season of "Golden September and Silver October," which provides bottom support for PTA prices. However, uncertainties in the downstream textile market remain prominent, with slower-than-expected recovery in both domestic and export orders. If peak-season orders fall short, polyester sales will be hindered, which could transmit upstream and drag PTA demand, triggering price corrections.

For polyester plants, high and volatile raw material prices require more flexible procurement strategies. In this window where supply recovery and peak-season expectations are intertwined, blindly chasing highs or over-de-stocking both carry risks. For downstream textile companies, PTA price fluctuations eventually pass through to polyester filament and staple fiber prices, affecting cost calculations and quoting.

From a medium-term perspective, the PTA industry is at a significant capacity cycle turning point. In 2026, China will see zero new PTA capacity, marking the end of a seven-year expansion cycle and entry into a stock competition era. Improved supply structure will provide long-term bottom support for PTA prices and processing margins, laying a fundamental basis for industry profit repair. This implies that even with short-term volatility, the industry's overall price resilience has strengthened compared to previous years.

Practical Recommendations

For Purchasers - Monitor maintenance restart progress; supply recovery in early September may bring price corrections, so consider slowing procurement pace and avoiding high-level stockpiling. - Based on order conditions, use batch purchasing or point-price models to lock in some forward raw material costs and reduce price fluctuation risk.

For Foreign Trade Enterprises - Closely track international oil and PX price trends, and include cost adjustment clauses in quotes to hedge against raw material price volatility and exchange rate risks. - Monitor overseas order placement during the peak season; if demand falls short, consider shortening procurement cycles and maintaining low inventory operations.
