PTA spot prices climbed above 6176 yuan per ton in late August, up 3.89% from the start of the month, yet slipped 1.23% day-on-day. This seemingly contradictory data reveals the core tension in the polyester value chain: upstream cost support versus downstream demand weakness.
Price Center of Gravity Shifts Up, but Faces Resistance
Over the past year, PTA prices bottomed at 4363 yuan and peaked at 6932 yuan, with the current level sitting near the 60th percentile—a mid-to-high position. Notably, the annual average is only 5551 yuan, meaning the August 28 price is 11% above the mean. This suggests the market has already priced in much of the bullish news, and further upside requires fresh catalysts.
The 1.23% daily decline may seem modest, but combined with recent trends, it signals that bulls are cautious above the 6200 yuan mark. For polyester plants, high feedstock costs and sluggish product price increases have squeezed processing margins, prompting some small and medium plants to consider output cuts—which in turn dampens PTA demand.
Cost Pass-Through and Inventory Dynamics
PTA pricing is primarily driven by upstream PX and downstream polyester operating rates. Currently, PX supply remains tight due to volatile international oil prices, providing a floor for PTA. However, downstream polyester sales are lackluster, with filament and staple fiber inventories rising week-on-week, and end-user weaving orders are mostly for immediate needs, with little speculative stocking.
This 'strong cost, weak demand' pattern makes PTA prices follow oil rises but resist falls: when crude climbs, spot prices follow; when crude drops, PTA shows resilience due to processing fee recovery. For foreign trade companies, currency fluctuations and shipping costs may warrant more attention than raw material prices, as end-order pricing often lags behind raw material swings.
Regional Industrial Cluster Reactions
In polyester clusters like Shengze and Changle, a cautious mood prevails. Polyester filament producers are holding prices steady but leaving room for negotiation in actual transactions; dyeing mills have slightly raised processing fees due to higher energy costs, but pass-through is limited. Traders in Shaoxing and Xiaoshan indicate that stocking at current levels is risky, preferring quick in-and-out strategies.
Seasonally, September-October is typically the peak season for autumn/winter fabric procurement. If terminal orders materialize as expected, PTA prices could remain strong in the 6000-6300 yuan range; otherwise, a pullback toward 5800 yuan support is possible.
