The polyester staple fiber market is flashing a signal that many overlook: on the same day, quotes for the same specification of melt-blown cotton-type premium PSF varied from 7560 to 7920 CNY/ton, a spread of 360 CNY/ton. Behind this number lie three overlapping factors: brand pricing power, regional supply-demand gaps, and logistics costs. For buyers, this may signal a fresh window for price comparison.
The Industrial Landscape Behind the Quotes
Public PSF quotes on August 28 paint a layered price map. For the mainstream specification of melt-blown cotton-type premium (1.56dtex*38mm), Huahong quoted 7560 CNY/ton, Zhonglei 7870, and Huaxicun 7920. The differences are not simple brand premiums but reflect each producer's capacity layout, raw material self-sufficiency, and sales strategy. Huahong, located in Wuxi, Jiangsu, sits close to downstream weaving clusters, shortening logistics radius and enabling more competitive pricing. Zhonglei and Huaxicun, though also in the Yangtze Delta, see slight differences in feedstock procurement and energy costs that eventually translate into quote gaps.
Notably, Henan Kaijie quoted fiber balls (ordinary grade) at 15500 CNY/ton, a stark contrast to regular PSF. Fiber balls are differentiated products mainly used in water treatment and other industrial fields, with high value-added attributes that decouple their pricing from bulk textile raw materials. This quote reminds the market that PSF category divergence is intensifying, and price trends for commodity and differentiated products are no longer moving in tandem.
Regional Spreads and Procurement Strategy
Looking at delivery locations, the quotes cluster in Zhengzhou (Henan), Huzhou (Zhejiang), and Wuxi (Jiangsu). Zhengzhou, a central logistics hub, reflects industrial channel costs for fiber balls, while Huzhou and Wuxi, core cities in the Yangtze Delta textile belt, are closer to end-use weaving demand. This geographic distribution means buyers must consider not just unit price but also transport costs, lead times, and quality stability when calculating total landed cost.
A deeper reason for the widening spread is the uneven recovery of downstream demand. Weaving operating rates in Jiangsu and Zhejiang are rising, supporting local quotes, while central regions see weaker demand with more sporadic orders, prompting some suppliers to adopt low-price strategies to maintain shipments. This regional divergence is expected to persist, creating arbitrage opportunities for cross-region procurement.
Price Trend Outlook
On the cost side, major feedstocks PTA and MEG have been trading in a narrow range recently, offering limited cost support. However, if international oil prices fluctuate, raw material costs could quickly transmit to PSF prices. The current 7560-7920 CNY/ton range is close to the cash cost line for some producers, limiting further downside. For buyers with annual volumes above a thousand tons, now may be a window for phased stockpiling.
