On August 28, three textile mills in Weifang, Shandong, quoted 32S ring-spun polyester yarn with a maximum spread of 550 CNY per ton, a 5.5% price gap. The specifications were identical: 32-count, ring-spun, first-grade, single-ply, ecru, and virgin-grade fiber. When product parameters converge but prices diverge, the market is not pricing the yarn—it is pricing strategy.
The Cost Logic Behind Price Divergence
In polyester yarn, raw material (polyester staple fiber) typically accounts for over 70% of cost. In theory, with the same raw material market, cost differences among the three mills should not exceed 2%. Yet the actual gap is 5.5%, implying non-cost factors at play. One possibility is different inventory purchase timing: mills that stocked up earlier at lower prices have more room to discount. Another is energy and labor cost allocation in the ring-spinning process, where equipment age and electricity contracts vary across local enterprises.
Notably, Runfengda quotes the lowest at 11,750 CNY/ton, while Guanjie Textile quotes the highest at 12,300 CNY/ton. The gradient suggests differing levels of order hunger. In an oversupplied market, low-price mills may prioritize volume and cash flow, while high-price mills rely on stable client relationships or differentiated services to support a premium. For buyers, this divergence is both an opportunity and a trap.
Competition and Transmission within the Industrial Belt
Weifang is an important textile cluster in Shandong, with a complete chain from spinning to weaving. Three mills in the same location quoting different prices indicates that competition has shifted from quality to strategy. For downstream weavers, this price gap opens negotiation space, but it also raises the risk of low-quality product. Key indicators like twist uniformity and CV% are not visible in public quotes, yet they directly affect weaving efficiency and fabric quality.
From a chain perspective, easing polyester yarn prices will gradually affect grey fabric and home textile costs. If the transaction center of 32S yarn moves lower, garment fabrics and home textiles using this yarn may see price adjustments in the next quarter. Foreign trade companies should monitor this signal, as export order cycles often span months, and raw material fluctuations may hit profit margins 3-6 months later.
