By the end of August, the PTA spot benchmark price settled at 6,176.75 yuan per ton, up 3.89% from the start of the month. Within a one-year cycle, this sits at a mid-to-high level: the lowest point over the past 12 months was 4,363.25 yuan, the highest 6,932.90 yuan, and the median 5,648.08 yuan. In other words, the current price is about 11% above the annual average, yet still 756 yuan below the peak.

Why the price center has moved up

The recent PTA rally is not an isolated event. Upstream, PX prices have been supported by fluctuating but firm crude oil, providing clear cost support. Downstream, polyester plants have maintained operating rates above 80%, ensuring steady demand for PTA. Both supply and demand factors pushed prices from 5,945.75 yuan at the beginning of the month to a high range mid-month.

Notably, on August 28, PTA prices fell 1.23% in a single day, indicating growing divergence at high levels. Some traders chose to take profits, while downstream polyester plants preferred to restock on demand, avoiding large inventories at elevated prices. This cautious sentiment reflects the market's skepticism about the sustainability of current price levels.

From an annual perspective, PTA prices have fluctuated over a range of more than 2,600 yuan, with amplitude close to 60%. Such volatility significantly raises the difficulty of inventory management and cost control for polyester filament and staple fiber producers that rely heavily on PTA. The old strategy of hoarding raw materials to bet on price increases is now extremely risky given the current volatility.

Transmission effects on the polyester chain

For every 100 yuan rise in PTA price, the cost of polyester filament increases by roughly 80 yuan, squeezing the processing margins of weaving mills. Currently, loom operating rates in Jiangsu and Zhejiang remain around 70%, with grey fabric inventories at moderate levels and terminal orders mainly for essential needs. If raw material price increases cannot be smoothly passed through to fabric prices, weaving mills will bear the brunt of profit losses.

A more far-reaching impact lies in the export sector. China is the world's largest producer of PTA and polyester fibers, and PTA price fluctuations directly affect textile and apparel export quotations. With the renminbi exchange rate becoming more volatile and raw material costs high, foreign trade companies are forced to shorten their quotation cycles. The previous model of quarterly quotes may now need to be adjusted monthly or even weekly, otherwise there is a high risk of accepting orders at a loss.

However, the fact that PTA prices are at a mid-to-high rather than absolute high provides some buffer. Compared with the low base of the same period last year, current prices still leave room for profit. The key lies in whether companies can use hedging and forward pricing tools to manage risks. For large polyester plants, locking in PTA supply through long-term contracts can help smooth spot market fluctuations.

Outlook and operational strategies

In the short term, PTA prices are likely to remain volatile at high levels. Crude oil trends, PX plant maintenance schedules, and polyester operating rates are key variables. If downstream demand continues to weaken, PTA inventories may accumulate, and prices could pull back to the 5,800-6,000 yuan range. Conversely, if the traditional peak season for orders exceeds expectations, prices could challenge 6,500 yuan.

For companies across the textile chain, it is not advisable to blindly chase highs or fall into excessive pessimism at this stage. A reasonable approach is to build raw material inventories in batches according to order cycles, using futures tools to hedge price risks. At the same time, closely monitor downstream polyester production and sales data as a leading indicator for price turning points.

For procurement departments - Given the mid-to-high price level, purchase on demand and avoid large one-time stockpiles to control inventory capital occupation - Monitor PTA futures basis changes; if the futures premium widens, consider buying hedges to lock in raw material costs for the next two months - Include price adjustment clauses in long-term supply agreements to cope with significant raw material price fluctuations

For foreign trade companies - Shorten quotation validity to 7-15 days and include a renegotiation clause if raw material prices move beyond a certain range - Use forward exchange contracts to lock in exchange rates and avoid profit erosion from RMB volatility - Monitor demand changes in Southeast Asia and South Asia; if PTA prices remain high, adjust product mix to increase high value-added fabrics
