In week 34 of 2026, textile commodity prices presented an unusual divergence: polyester filament varieties rose over 1.7% while acrylonitrile dropped 4.46% and PTA fell 3.67%. This is not a random fluctuation but a sign of broken cost transmission and shifting pricing power. For buyers, it may signal a window for renegotiation.
Background
According to industry monitoring data, from August 24-28, polyester POY, DTY, and FDY prices rose 2.00%, 1.76%, and 1.70% respectively, closing at 8767.5, 9930.71, and 8970 yuan per ton. Year-on-year, these three products are up over 21%. Meanwhile, polyester staple fiber fell 0.96%. This divergence within the same chain indicates different downstream demand structures.
Acrylonitrile plunged 4.46% to 11433.33 yuan/ton, though still 44.12% higher year-on-year. PTA dropped 3.67% to 6213.25 yuan/ton, up 26.54% year-on-year. The correction in these upstream chemical fiber materials suggests the cost-push rally is ending, and the market is shifting from seller-pricing to demand-pricing.
Industry Impact
The strength of polyester filament is tied to high operating rates in Jiangsu and Zhejiang weaving clusters, where water-jet looms run above 80%. Demand for POY and DTY remains rigid. In contrast, the weakness in polyester staple fiber reflects reduced substitution demand as cotton prices rose only 0.06% and cotton yarn prices were flat, making cotton more attractive for blended yarn producers.
Acrylonitrile's sharp correction pressures acrylic fiber producers in Shandong and Jiangsu. While lower feedstock costs improve processing margins, they may trigger buyer wait-and-see sentiment, driving down acrylic yarn prices. Coastal plants relying on imported acrylonitrile face higher inventory management complexity amid exchange rate fluctuations.
PTA's decline could lower the overall cost center of the polyester chain. Despite this week's rise in polyester filament, if PTA continues to weaken, filament prices may face correction after the traditional September peak. Exporters should watch this transmission: with RMB exchange rate volatility and high freight costs, lower raw material costs could enhance export competitiveness, but beware customers demanding price renegotiation.
