On August 28, the polyester staple fiber market exhibited a rare price stratification: textile-grade PSF quotes ranged from 7560 to 7920 RMB/ton, while water treatment fiber balls reached as high as 15500 RMB/ton. This twofold gap is not market speculation but a direct reflection of differences in application and processing. For buyers, understanding the logic behind the price gap is more practical than chasing a single price number.

Industrial Logic Behind Price Stratification

According to public quotes on that day, textile-grade PSF showed a clear regional gradient: Huahong brand in Wuxi, Jiangsu, at 7560 RMB/ton; Zhonglei in Huzhou, Zhejiang, at 7870 RMB/ton; and Huaxicun in Wuxi, Jiangsu, at 7920 RMB/ton. The price gap of about 360 RMB/ton among the three locations reflects differences in raw material costs, logistics expenses, and capacity utilization. Notably, these products share the same specification (1.56dtex*38mm, melt direct spinning, cotton type, first-grade), yet prices vary significantly, indicating that competition has shifted from quality to overall cost control.

The water treatment fiber ball quote of 15500 RMB/ton is more than double that of textile-grade PSF. This is not a simple premium on the same product but a result of added value from special processing (such as crimping and ball forming). Henan Kaijie offers three diameters (30/40/50mm) at the same price, suggesting that pricing in the water treatment sector is based more on functionality than size differentiation. This cross-sector price comparison reveals the value divergence of PSF in different downstream applications.

Transmission and Impact on the Textile Industry Chain

The price level of textile-grade PSF directly reflects the profit space of downstream spinning mills. Based on current cotton-type staple fiber prices, raw materials account for about 70% of yarn costs. If PSF prices remain in the 7560-7920 RMB/ton range, spinning mills' gross margins will be further compressed. Especially during the transition between peak and off-seasons, terminal orders show no significant increase, and PSF procurement is mostly for rigid replenishment, explaining the lack of upward price momentum.

The regional price gap offers an arbitrage window for cross-regional procurement. The gap between Wuxi, Jiangsu, and Huzhou, Zhejiang, is about 310 RMB/ton. Considering transportation costs of typically 100-150 RMB/ton, there remains a margin of about 160 RMB/ton. However, buyers must be wary of quality issues in lower-priced products, such as batch stability and defect content. It is advisable to refine quality penalty clauses when signing annual framework contracts to avoid small losses.

The high price of water treatment fiber balls suggests that industry players should pay attention to the growth potential of non-woven fields. Stricter environmental policies are driving demand for industrial wastewater treatment, and fiber balls as filter media may expand faster than traditional textile fields. For enterprises with melt direct spinning capacity, developing differentiated products (such as modified or functional fibers) could open new profit points rather than competing solely on price in the red ocean.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Establish a multi-region price comparison mechanism: regularly track public quotes from major production areas such as Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Henan, calculate actual landed costs including freight, and avoid over-reliance on a single supplier. - Strengthen quality acceptance standards: increase sampling frequency for low-priced sources, focus on testing length, fineness deviation, and oil content, and commission third-party testing when necessary. - Monitor raw material linkage: PSF prices are significantly affected by PTA and ethylene glycol. Buyers should track commodity trends and moderately increase inventory when raw material prices are low.

For Foreign Trade Enterprises - Optimize export quotes using price gaps: when signing export contracts, adjust FOB quotes based on domestic regional price differences to ensure profit margins. - Explore export opportunities in non-woven fields: differentiated products like water treatment fiber balls have demand in Southeast Asia and the Middle East; consider small trial orders to avoid intense competition in textile and apparel exports. - Lock in exchange rate risks: given raw material price volatility, adopt forward settlement or RMB-denominated contracts to reduce the impact of exchange rate fluctuations on profits.
