The price signal of polyester staple fiber is undergoing subtle shifts. On August 31, 2026, the industry benchmark price settled at 7,744.82 CNY/ton, up 2.37% from the beginning of the month. The annual range of 6,267.17-8,426.02 CNY/ton places the current price at a mid-to-high level, still 681.2 CNY/ton below the yearly peak. Behind these figures lies a rebalancing among raw material costs, supply-demand dynamics, and supply chain expectations.
The Logic of a Rising Price Center
Annual statistics show the average price of polyester staple fiber at 7,122.98 CNY/ton, while the current price exceeds the average by about 8.7%, indicating the market has moved away from the bottom. Since the start of the year, prices have rebounded from the low of 6,267.17 CNY/ton to 7,744.82 CNY/ton, a cumulative gain of 23.6%—a slope rarely seen in the past three years. The direct driver is cost support from upstream PTA and MEG, as higher crude oil prices have strengthened the petrochemical chain, and polyester staple fiber, as an intermediate product in the polyester industry, is highly sensitive to cost changes.
More critically, this rally is not purely cost-push. Downstream yarn mills maintain operating rates above 70%, and rigid demand from home textiles and apparel orders provides actual support for prices. In other words, cost and demand have formed a temporary resonance, rather than the previous one-way transmission.
Risks and Opportunities in High-Level Fluctuations
Despite strong price performance, the market is not without concerns. The current price is still 8.8% below the yearly high of 8,426.02 CNY/ton, and the zero daily change indicates weakening short-term momentum. Industry inventory data show that polyester staple fiber inventory days at major polyester plants have risen to about 15 days, higher than the same period last year, which may pressure upward price movements.
For buyers, this means the risk of chasing prices is accumulating. If international oil prices correct or downstream orders fall short, prices may retreat toward the median of 7,346.6 CNY/ton. However, excessive pessimism is unwarranted—the bottom difference of 1,477.65 CNY/ton suggests that even if a correction occurs, prices are unlikely to return to the deep lows of early this year, as the cost platform has fundamentally shifted upward.
From a regional cluster perspective, polyester staple fiber producers in Jiangsu and Zhejiang (such as Shaoxing and Xiaoshan) face dual pressures from raw material costs and environmental investments, and some small and medium capacities have shown intentions to reduce production. This self-regulation on the supply side may provide medium-term support for prices.
Transmission and Responses Along the Chain
Price fluctuations in polyester staple fiber are transmitting downstream to yarn, fabric, and even apparel segments. For spinning mills that rely heavily on polyester staple fiber, raw material costs typically account for over 70% of total costs, meaning this round of price increases will directly compress their profit margins. In fact, some yarn products have seen price increases, but the increases lag behind raw materials, narrowing processing spreads.
For foreign trade enterprises, exchange rate fluctuations and uncertain overseas demand limit the ability to pass on costs. If raw material prices remain high, the price competitiveness of export orders may be weakened, especially for low-value-added products targeting Southeast Asian markets.
