Acrylonitrile prices are consolidating at elevated levels. On August 31, 2026, the benchmark price stood at 11,433.33 yuan per tonne, up 2.69% from the start of the month and near the top of the past year's range. This level is more than 63% above the year's low of 7,000 yuan, while the annual median is only 9,533.34 yuan, making the current price nearly 20% higher. Such sustained highs are intensifying cost pressure on downstream sectors like acrylic fiber and ABS resin.
High Prices and Industrial Transmission
Annual statistics show acrylonitrile traded in a wide band from 7,000 to 12,066.67 yuan per tonne, with the current price only 633.34 yuan below the peak and 4,433.33 yuan above the trough. The annual average of 9,109.24 yuan is significantly lower than today's level, signaling that the market has entered a cyclical high. For acrylic fiber producers, raw material costs dominate; every 100 yuan rise in acrylonitrile increases production costs by roughly 150 yuan per tonne (based on a 1.5 consumption ratio), squeezing margins further. The ABS resin sector faces similar strain, as acrylonitrile is a key feedstock, and sluggish downstream demand from appliances and autos limits cost pass-through.
Supply-Demand Dynamics and Market Outlook
Behind the high prices is intensifying supply-demand tug-of-war. Concentrated plant maintenance and tight import availability have supported prices, but downstream operating rates have not kept pace, with some acrylic fiber plants planning load reductions or turnarounds. This 'strong feedstock, weak demand' pattern is unlikely to persist. Historically, when prices deviate more than 20% from the annual average, a correction often follows. The current price is 25.3% above the average, entering a risk zone. Should plants restart or imports increase, downward pressure will build. For buyers, chasing high prices now carries more risk than reward.
