On August 31, the polyester staple fiber (PSF) spot market delivered a signal worth pondering: Fujian Jinlun raised its semi-dull direct-spun 1.4D*38mm grade offer by 100 yuan/ton to 8350 yuan/ton (short-distance delivery). On the same day, the main contract of PSF on the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange closed at 7504 yuan/ton, up 26 yuan/ton from the previous session. Spot and futures rose in tandem, but with a notable divergence—spot gained nearly four times more than futures, revealing a gap in expectations between the physical and financial markets.

The Triple Logic Behind the Price Signal

The hike is not an isolated move, but a result of cost, inventory, and sentiment resonance. First, the raw material side—PTA and MEG—saw a recent upward shift in price centers, directly lifting the cash cost of PSF. According to public industry data, the average spot price of PTA in August rose about 2% from July, providing cost support for the PSF price increase. Second, as a regional leader, Fujian Jinlun's price move often carries a 'probe' nature—when industry inventories are low, a preemptive price hike tests downstream acceptance and sets a benchmark for future pricing.

From an inventory cycle perspective, the operating rate of the PSF industry remained around 80% in mid-to-late August, but finished goods inventory at mainstream mills stood at 10-15 days, a moderately low level. Low inventory strengthens sellers' bargaining power, which is why the hike could be implemented. Notably, the futures market's modest gain indicates that capital remains cautious about long-term supply-demand balance, and the spot-futures spread widened to 846 yuan/ton, providing room for hedging operations.

Industrial Chain Transmission: A Chain Reaction from Spinners to Weavers

The most immediate impact of the PSF price increase falls on downstream spinning mills. The semi-dull direct-spun 1.4D*38mm grade is a major substitute for cotton, widely used in pure polyester yarn and blended yarn production. Based on current processing fees, every 100 yuan/ton rise in PSF increases yarn costs by approximately 120-150 yuan/ton. For small and medium spinners with thin margins, this increase could erode most of their processing profits, forcing them to either raise yarn prices or cut purchases.

From a regional cluster perspective, Fujian Jinlun's price adjustment directly affects polyester yarn clusters such as Changle in Fujian and Xiaoshan in Zhejiang. The Changle area is dominated by pure polyester yarn and is highly sensitive to PSF prices. After this hike, local spinners may face a dilemma of 'cannot follow the rise, cannot afford not to'. Weaving mills (e.g., in Shengze and Keqiao) may hedge cost pressure by adjusting blend ratios or increasing the use of recycled polyester, which could indirectly benefit the recycled staple fiber market.

Practical Advice for Buyers

In the short term, the spot price firming sentiment may persist, but downstream buyers should be wary of a pullback after a 'pulse' rally. The modest futures gain suggests that market expectations for a looser supply-demand balance in Q4 remain unchanged, so chasing highs is not recommended.

For Purchasers - Batch purchasing: Split procurement into 2-3 batches, with the first batch at around 8350 yuan/ton for small replenishment, and decide later based on futures and PTA trends. - Monitor the spot-futures spread: With the spread exceeding 800 yuan/ton, consider buying futures or using point pricing to lock in forward costs instead of relying solely on spot purchases. - Lock in substitute raw materials: If PSF continues to rise, evaluate the cost-effectiveness of recycled PSF or viscose staple fiber, and adjust blend ratios in a timely manner.

For Foreign Trade Enterprises - Shorten quotation validity: During price volatility, reduce the validity of external quotations from the usual 7-10 days to 3-5 days to avoid profit erosion from dual fluctuations in exchange rates and raw materials. - Embed price adjustment clauses: When signing contracts with overseas clients, add a raw material price linkage clause, agreeing to renegotiate contract prices if PSF prices fluctuate more than 5%. - Utilize futures tools: For enterprises with export hedging needs, use PSF futures on the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange to hedge raw material costs and enhance quotation competitiveness.
