Wool, a classic natural fiber, is being redefined. At the 2026 China International Trade Fair for Textile Fabrics & Accessories (Autumn/Winter), Jiangsu Sun Group showcased multiple wool-polylactic acid (PLA) blended fabrics and announced they have reached scale production. This signifies that the combination of bio-based materials and premium wool has moved beyond the lab into commercially available products.
Event Background
The expo was held from August 25 to 27 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai). Sun Group's booth was crowded on the opening day, drawing domestic and international brand purchasing managers and fabric designers, with consultation areas fully occupied. During the expo, Sun Group, together with Anhui Fengyuan Biotechnology Co., Ltd., Anhui Huamao Textile Co., Ltd., and Wuxi Aike Plush Technology Co., Ltd., launched a PLA industry chain collaborative development center, aiming to integrate the entire chain from fiber raw materials to finished fabrics.
With four decades of wool spinning expertise, Sun Group presented its product matrix under four themes: 'Form', 'Frontier', 'Fidelity', and 'Flourish', covering urban commuting, light outdoor, sustainability, and health scenarios. The 'Fidelity' series focuses on blends of wool with bio-based, biodegradable, and recycled fibers, while 'Flourish' highlights bio-based antibacterial fabrics for skin comfort. These products leverage a database of wool spinning formulas, combined with an AI interactive system for rapid style-to-garment matching.
Industry Impact
The technical challenges of wool-PLA blending include fiber compatibility, dyeing uniformity, and finishing processes. Sun Group, in collaboration with Jiangnan University, optimized fiber ratios and processing routes to overcome these hurdles, with the technology appraised as internationally advanced. The entire product line has achieved scale production, which carries multiple implications for the industry.
For buyers, this means premium wool fabrics now have an option that combines functionality and environmental performance. The blended fabric retains wool's natural feel while gaining PLA's softness, breathability, natural antibacterial and anti-mite properties, and is biodegradable and recyclable, aligning with increasingly stringent sustainability requirements from international brands. For mills, the PLA industry chain center helps integrate upstream fiber, midstream spinning and weaving, and downstream finishing resources, reducing R&D risks and accelerating commercialization of bio-based fabrics.
From a broader perspective, wool as a natural protein fiber is inherently biodegradable, but traditional finishing and blending often introduce non-degradable chemicals. PLA offers the possibility of a fully bio-based fabric, potentially becoming a new competitive focus in premium suiting and outdoor functional fabrics. Several leaders from the China National Textile and Apparel Council visited Sun Group's booth during the expo, affirming its dual strategy of technology leadership and green development, and encouraging continued breakthroughs in core technologies.
