On September 1, 2026, the domestic spot benchmark price of PTA settled at 6303.50 yuan per ton, up 1.45% in a single day and 6.02% from the beginning of the previous month. The price now sits in the mid-to-high range of the past year, with only about 630 yuan left before reaching the annual peak of 6932.90 yuan. This rally is rewriting the cost structure of the entire textile supply chain.

Price Center Shifts Upward: PTA Leaves the Bottom Zone

Annual statistics show that over the past 12 months, PTA prices hit a low of 4363.25 yuan/ton and a high of 6932.90 yuan/ton, with an average of 5566.10 yuan. The current price of 6303.50 yuan is 1940.25 yuan above the bottom, an increase of over 44%. This indicates that PTA has left the low-price zone and entered a mid-to-high operating channel.

For downstream polyester plants, the cost transmission logic is clear: every 100 yuan increase in PTA raises polyester chip production costs by about 85 yuan. If polyester products cannot raise prices accordingly, cash flow will come under pressure. In fact, some polyester plants have already tested price hikes in early September, but whether fabric orders can absorb them remains to be seen.

Industrial Impact: Cost Pressure Amplifies Along the Chain

PTA price increases do not affect all players equally. Polyester plants bear the first impact, but leading enterprises can buffer short-term shocks through scale procurement and long-term contracts. The real pressure amplifies when it reaches the fabric sector—polyester accounts for 60-70% of grey fabric costs, so a 5% rise in raw materials can increase grey fabric costs by over 3%.

For weaving mills producing conventional polyester taffeta and pongee, price increases are limited due to product homogeneity, squeezing profits further. Conversely, suppliers of differentiated fabrics may leverage this opportunity to optimize product mix and convert cost pressure into pricing power. This divergence is already visible in clusters like Keqiao and Shengze: price hikes for standard varieties are generally 2-3%, while functional fabrics can rise by more than 5%.

Event Timing: September Becomes a Critical Window

The September 1 price movement is not an isolated event. At the beginning of last month, the PTA benchmark was 5945.75 yuan/ton, rising 357.75 yuan within a month—an accelerated pace. This coincides with the downstream 'golden September and silver October' stocking season, meaning market acceptance of price hikes may be temporarily higher.

However, caution is warranted: the current price is only a step away from the annual high. If crude oil or PX prices correct, PTA could face a pullback. For textile enterprises, September is both the peak order season and a key window for cost locking. Raw material purchasing rhythm, long-term contract ratios, and product price adjustments all need decisions within the next two weeks.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Build positions in batches to avoid chasing highs: lock in 30%-50% of demand now, and wait for pullbacks for the rest. - Monitor PX and crude oil trends: PTA costs are driven by PX; if oil falls, PTA will likely follow, allowing delayed purchases. - Include price adjustment clauses in long-term contracts: link PTA benchmark to polyester settlement prices to reduce unilateral volatility risk.

For Exporters - Use floating price mechanisms in quotes: set a price fluctuation range in contracts and renegotiate when exceeded to avoid dual risks of raw materials and exchange rates. - Prioritize high-value-added orders: conventional products are hard to raise prices; guide customers toward functional and differentiated fabrics to cover cost increases. - Watch RMB exchange rates and export tax rebate policies: raw material hikes combined with currency fluctuations may compress profits; adjust settlement strategies and use financial tools to hedge.
